two decades ago today
my being plunged forth awake
from the unknown void of creation
fast forward to a bite of cake
that only my mom can make

these years have been sweet like cream
and sour like acid
and flavored in between
I will always be a kid

often mistaken for years younger
perhaps I can work it in my favor
here’s to facing front-wise
to taste every single flavor

some question their existence
as though it were a mistake
but were it entirely frosting
then there would be no cake

two decades ago, there I was
and I’m so blessed, because
I’m not sure how it works
but I’m sure glad it does
